Significance

Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela at the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. It is considered the holiest site for taking a ritual bath during Kumbh. The Prayagraj Kumbh is the largest of the four and attracts the highest number of pilgrims from around the world.

Legend & History

According to legend, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), drops of the nectar of immortality (amrit) fell at four places, including Prayagraj. The confluence is also called Prayag, a revered pilgrimage site mentioned in ancient scriptures. Bathing at the Sangam during Kumbh is believed to cleanse sins and grant spiritual liberation.

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, समुद्र मंथन के दौरान अमृत की बूंदें चार स्थानों पर गिरीं, जिनमें प्रयागराज भी शामिल है। संगम को प्रयाग भी कहा जाता है और इसका उल्लेख प्राचीन ग्रंथों में है। कुंभ के समय संगम में स्नान करने से पापों से मुक्ति और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति मानी जाती है।
