Significance

Ujjain hosts the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) on the banks of the Shipra River. The city is also home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain is held when Jupiter enters the Leo zodiac (Simha Rashi), making it a uniquely timed Kumbh. Ram Ghat is the main bathing site during the festival.

उज्जैन में क्षिप्रा नदी के तट पर कुंभ मेला (सिंहस्थ) आयोजित होता है। यह शहर महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। उज्जैन का सिंहस्थ कुंभ तब होता है जब बृहस्पति सिंह राशि में प्रवेश करता है। राम घाट कुंभ स्नान का प्रमुख स्थल है।

Legend & History

Ancient Ujjain (Ujjayini) is one of the seven sacred cities and a renowned center of learning and astronomy. It is said that drops of amrit fell here during the Samudra Manthan, sanctifying the Shipra. The city is linked with King Vikramaditya and the poet Kalidasa. Bathing in the Shipra during Simhastha is believed to bring spiritual merit and purification.

प्राचीन उज्जैन (उज्जयिनी) सप्त पुरी में से एक है और शिक्षा एवं खगोल विज्ञान का प्रसिद्ध केंद्र रहा है। मान्यता है कि समुद्र मंथन के दौरान अमृत की बूंदें यहां गिरीं, जिससे क्षिप्रा पवित्र हुई। यह शहर राजा विक्रमादित्य और कवि कालिदास से जुड़ा है। सिंहस्थ के समय क्षिप्रा में स्नान करने से पुण्य और पवित्रता प्राप्त होती है।
